Poundland began its life in April of 1990 with funds provided by the multi-million pound sale of an international wholesale business. Poundland entered the market place in a highly credible manner, with an attractive shopfit and irresistible concept.
Poundland's retailing concept is simple: Every item in a range of more than 2000 is offered for sale at the same price and represents unbelievable value for money.
Our pilot store opened in the Octagon Centre, Burton-upon-Trent in December of 1990, followed by openings in High Street, Meadowhall and other quality trading locations. The concept was enthusiastically received by shoppers, fellow retailers and landlords. From a trading perspective the store proved to be a huge success. Meadowhall's success was repeated by four more stores opened in quality trading locations before the end of that year.

Successfully surpassing our most optimistic trading expectations, Poundland has established a history of target beating performance, and is now capitalising on the benefits and economies of scale available to a large, maturing business.

To this end, Poundland has invested substantially in the computerisation of stock control, distribution, financial and staff management systems and in fact own the software company responsible for our principle software solutions.
