American International Underwriters (AIU) is the overseas property-casualty insurance division of the AIG companies. AIU's headquarters are in New York, and its Greater China headquarters in Hong Kong.

AIU, through its various operations, provides quality commercial and consumer insurance services throughout South-East Asia, the Far East and Greater China, including property, marine and casualty coverage for both large and small companies and households.

AIU's culture of disciplined underwriting and product innovation has provided a long-standing competitive advantage since general insurance operations were established in Shanghai in 1992. Further growth saw the launch of Guangzhou operations in 1995, followed by the opening of the Foshan sub-branch and the Shenzhen branch in 1999.

In 2004, all of AIU's offices in China obtained licenses to sell property/casualty insurance products to local companies and consumers in accordance with China's WTO commitments.

With its long experience and comprehensive network, AIU is now well-positioned to capitalize on new opportunities arising from the increasing liberalization of Chinese markets.
