Shanghai Baolai Scientific Development Company was established in 1998 as a private high-tech enterprise specializing in the research and development, production, and sales of didactic equipment for universities and vocational colleges. Originally, the company was the Shanghai office of LD DIDACTIC GmbH. To this day, Shanghai Baolai remains the only production and collaborative research base for LD in China.

The products of Shanghai Baolai are mainly aimed at electrical and electronic related courses in engineering colleges, including electrical and electronic training systems, power electronics training systems, motor drive training systems, basic PLC training systems, automatic control principle training systems and more. The products adopt a modular design, emphasizing the development of students' engineering practice abilities through the experimental process. The company's current business includes domestic sales of independently developed products, the export of different classified products to Europe, America, and Southeast Asia, and acting as an agent for advanced international products from peers in China. Since 2007, the company has been working with Siemens AG's Education Department, providing teaching and training equipment for Siemens' industrial automation equipment.

The company's clientele covers more than 300 engineering colleges in China, including over 80% of key universities listed in the country's 985, 211, and Double First-Class programs that use Shanghai Baolai's products. The company is well-known in the industry for its quality and service, and has received good feedback from customers. One of the earliest users of the company's products, the electrical experiment bench at Tsinghua University, has been in use for over 20 years without significant quality issues.
