The major advantage of expanded metal is that the mesh is formed from a single piece of metal material like mild steel, stainless steel or any other metal sheet which is cut and stretched while still leaving it attached to the sheet at the knuckle. The unique manufacture processing enables the metal to retain its shape when cut. Often cutting to shape is the only fabrication needed for expanded metal materials.

The uncut knuckles support weight and withstand stress better than jointed welded wire mesh or woven wire materials. Expanded mesh can be supplied in a variety of finishes, thickness, raised or flattened. Flattened expanded metal mesh is smoother in surface but is not as strong as the more robust raised metal mesh.
